Retrospective Part 6

Life is a journey.

Sometimes your life happens during a journey. So the journey becomes part of your life. For that is a journey well spent, being remembered as ‘that time’.

So my journey in life propelled onwards. Having completed 75% of the final exams, only one day would matter yet: The day of the presentation. So I prepared some slides, went through several feedback iterations with my dear coworkers and spent most of december circling around the idea of a perfect presentation of my project.

Besides some pleasant days with friends and family and all of Christmas’ joys, the task to come was nagging at me. But that didn’t mess with my plans. My plans to visit a dear friend. At that time she was an intern on an island in the Atlantic Ocean, west of Africa: Gran Canaria.

The premise was a mixed affair. Partly she had to work her shifts, partly I would work on my presentation, partly we would explore the island and set out to find wondrous places.

It was a journey to remember. Filled with beauty, celebration of life, friendship, sun and some unexpected experiences.

Did I mention I spent New Year’s Eve there? What a way to kick off 2019!

2019. A better week into it, the day came. The day I prepared for sitting on a balcony, looking at the Atlantic Ocean, hearing and smelling the unknown environment, going through my slides. Reading them to my friend, thinking about it every day there. In one morning it should show its payoff.

The presentation itself got the highest mark there is. Shaking hands with the teacher, walking out of the room, driving off, I realised: The time ‘after’ had begun.

Now I pursue other goals than an apprenticeship. What they are and where they lead I will tell you. As soon as I find out.

Retrospective Part 5

The later part of the year was all about finishing.

As you know, my life after returning from New Zealand was determined. I began an apprenticeship and I set out to finish it to the best of my ability. To do so, much strength and endurance were needed.

In the end it went more than well and thank god, I finished this part of my life. Surprisingly, with the same score as the first apprenticeship back when the blog started: 94%

I also accomplished understanding early enough what would come: That I had to finish a certain project, set up a documentation about it (which exclusively would be graded) and to present it in the end. Also a final written exam in three parts was awaiting. This was all September to November. Basically all I knew I lived for that time.
After the deadlines would have expired and the exam was taken, I had some more time for the final part: Presenting the project and having some technical talk with the teacher afterwards. For this last part the company I work for takes great pleasure in preparing their apprentices. In early January, the day of the presentation, my learning state would fall off of me and I would be all done.
After New Zealand I had some medium-term plan. But this plan would resolve the moment I received a certain piece of paper. What then, I asked myself very often…

So, we have some outline of the greater points of the rest of the year: Write down an undeniable project documentation, take this exam, set up a smashing final presentation, don’t fall into the great pit after you’re done.

While the exam merely was a collection of things we prepared to answer for better two years, the other two parts required a time span of focused preparation.

More or less planned, those two stressful and tense periods of time were accompanied by travel.

First came the documentation.
I had to produce not only text, but a technical representation of what my project was about. It was all about precision, while maintaining a sense of ease for reading pleasure.

That was the time we went to Denmark again. One week, I might have thought, but each week was precious to spend writing. Thus, the vacation would be rather toned and I always knew I had to do something.

Trips like this are all about relaxation, pleasurable undertakings (even long walks would count) and fun.

For a week life would revolve around the plate on the table, crunching sand under our shoes, melting ice-cream on the tip of the tongue, meaningful playing cards, meaningful exhibitions at the museum, meaningful conversations, trips round the area and not least those quiet mornings in front of the laptop. (Did I tell enough people I finally got the groundbreaking difference between the Desk-Top and the Lap-Top? Desk and Lap = Mind blown.)

That was the environment important parts of the dreaded documentation were forged. In retrospect, there could not be a time and place more fitting.

The day came and we handed in the documentation. The days of intense preparation towards the written exam passed, we went out of the room and were relieved. We were done with that part.

Coming up next was the last part of examination: The splendid-to-be presentation plus tech talk.
Do you think I found a place as fitting and soothing as Denmark to prepare for that?
Find out in the next entry! That one will also conclude my retrospective, as we are closing in on the new time of my life I will tell you all about.

See you then!

Retrospective Part 4

When summer bathed the land in warmth and light, more trips were in order.

I once more saw my friends in the southern parts and we had quite some adventures together! Culinary speaking and literally, both.

One day, after a feast for breakfast we went to see a lost place. We didn’t only explore and venture, we also organized a water gun fight. Which served many purposes, including relief from the heat, additional heat and cool experiences running through empty buildings and long abandoned workplaces.

Also, we had some nice times chilling and well…working out a little. 😀

Not only I stayed with those friends, I also went to Munich to have some more posh sights to find. A nice contrast for sure. From up high the Olympiaturm you find some interesting views!

Back home I had the opportunity to capture the beautiful marshes right next to where I live. When the sun is low, it is a nice place to wander about.

Retrospective Part 3

Looking at the topics I chose to give you some glimpses of my past, I notice it is almost exclusively trips I tell you about.
This could mean three things: Either my life at home is not picturesque or it is plain boring. Or that I only take my camera to trips.

This makes me think: What makes a life exciting? Is it the trips you have? Is it the things you can show to others?
Are there things you can’t show? Things that can hardly be photographed?

I think there is something that goes beyond pictures and descriptive words. There are stories. Experiences. Adventures.
You are being shaped, influenced and nurtured by the time you spend.

The reason why those experiences are always great is that I never went alone. There are people. Companions. Friends. And I don’t want to miss but one of them.

So summer came and Oh! it was a wondrous time. You know that idyllic ‘day at the lake’? We had that. Some camping, some water, some music, some sun, some walk and lots of fun!

Also, I visited Munich for the first time. It was an experience partly set in the city and partly at a medieval festival. My friend and I had a grand time indeed.

A great deal of my life revolves around my workplace. And by all means, it is not all bleak and sad! Some days we get together not to do our everyday job, but to spend some time casually. And we are quite good at that! This time we went on a canoe tour. Just at the brink of announcing the paddling to be work, we arrived at the campsite. We were awaited by drinks, food and a long night that, I think, brought us all a bit closer.

Retrospective Part 2

In retrospective, last year seemed to be all about visiting every corner of Germany and some of Europe even.

How to better kick off a year than going skiing? Part business trip, part skiing adventure, we had a blast in the Dolomites!

Around Easter I brought some pictures back from the northwestern shore and even from the Netherlands. One remarkable trip that was!

A little later I had the chance to properly visit the German capital and learn a great deal about its history. Old and full of significant sights it stayed in my head.

For the first part of the year, it has been a ride and I remember it dearly.
Main ingredient of the best experiences are people. It adds flavour, when you recall ‘the old times’.
